European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
